The Yarra River races past the spot I chose for this plein air painting. Reefton, Victoria, a small locality in the Upper Yarra Valley, was a thriving gold mining hub from the 1850s onward. Today, its heritage survives in remnants of mines and sluices, while the nearby Reservoir Park showcases the region’s natural beauty. It’s a place where the story of gold, timber, and community blends seamlessly with scenic landscapes, offering a vivid glimpse into the past and present of this unique valley.
I couldn’t help but note the river’s living testament to its enriching power, the stark scrubbiness pointing to the difficulties of the terrain and the sunlight glinting off a young wattle’s new leaves as a subtle effortless offering of ‘true gold’ for anyone who pauses to notice.
