I began this plein air painting with the storm cloud. I then turned my hand to the tenacity of the lone tree, majestic with age and character; a witness tree, scarred yet steadfast. Most of the surrounding saplings had perished, yet wildflowers, grasses, and low bushes flourished.
This work captures the ache of transition: beauty laced with sorrow, strength forged through weathering. It is a morning both wistful and watchful, where the land waits under a heavy sky, holding its breath for light to break through.
Step back, and the storm cloud seems to vanish, replaced by the illusion of a promontory stretching along the far shore of a neighboring lake. I love that: how paint can tell two stories at once, depending on how you look.
